9 BENEFITS OF HAVING FUN AT WORK.

Flashback to my previous job, I dreaded every working day so much so I vouched to myself that I would never accept another job where I was unhappy. In fact, in search of that happiness, I began idolizing entrepreneurship a lot more. As life would have it, my employment was placed on hold due to financial constraints faced by the company.

In the midst of one less pay-cheque, I was relieved and happy. Fast forward to one year and three months later, my concrete perception of not devoting genuine effort in helping someone else build their brand has been smashed and broken by the level of satisfaction and joy I experience every single day at work.

I can’t help but beg the question, “Why am I happier in an office similar to my previous workspace which equated to hell?”

Here are nine benefits of fun at work which contribute to my answer:

PLANNING IN OFFICE TOGETHER

FUN IMPROVES COMMUNICATION AND BREEDS COLLABORATION

Effective communication is the single most important skill in the workplace. On a typical day, employees spend the majority of their time collaborating with others; ritual morning meetings, assigning tasks, accumulating information for customers and clients and casual talk.

Fun paves the way for a relaxed environment. In return, trust, openness, and honesty are ushered down the hierarchy. True personalities are then cultivated by the mere fact that honest collaboration inspires mutual understanding.

At the same breath, such environments make it easy to learn who wants to be part of the solution and who are grounded in disruption.

FUN INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY

Being happy is important, not only for health benefits but for productivity in the workplace. In a jovial atmosphere, work ethics are increased.

Positive emotions are affiliated with creativity, motivation, optimism, and employee engagement; factors which contribute directly to increased productivity.

Happy employees are more invested in the company and show a greater appreciation towards team goals. They are the ones who have a desire to achieve ultimate success.

Being happy in the workplace often cultivates a sense of purpose. When people find purpose in their work they immediately begin to feel important no matter their level, status, or position. Feeling important brings about a sense of security.

HAPPY EMPLOYEES STAY

Unhappy employees are naturally dreaded. The first instinct of an unhappy employee is to alternatively seek gainful employment with high hopes of being happier, even if it means a few hundred dollars less. No one enjoys working in a tense environment.

HAPPY EMPLOYEES ARE HEALTHY HUMANS

Satisfied employees who have fun at work are less vulnerable to the effects of stress and anxiety, therefore, lowering the risk of various diseases.

Unlike happy employees, unhappy employees are often stressed. The body picks up the signals and releases stress hormones as a response to the signals, as a means of protecting the body. Eventually, constant firing increases the chances of serious health risks. As a result, employees are absent more frequently.

Fun should, therefore, be encouraged in the workplace, making it a warmer place to be. Numerous benefits are in favor of both the employee and company when the work environment remains healthy.

CUSTOMERS ARE INFECTED BY EMPLOYEES’ ENTHUSIASM

Happy enthusiastic employees foster happy enthusiastic customers/clients. Not only will customer service be more inviting but sale pitches may increase.

FUN GIVES YOUR COMPANY AN EDGE

As is, it is rare to find a company which promotes a healthy, fun environment. As such, onlookers are appalled by the sound of a company which balances work with fun. It draws them in like a magnet.

Now more than ever, company culture is gaining importance. This is as a result of millennials stepping into the game. They want to know that they are going to be happy before considering a contract.

When a potential client or employee is familiar with a brand, trust is built and they are more likely to engage with you.

FUN IN THE OFFICE STIMULATES CREATIVITY

Did you know that the right brain works best when it is free? Have you ever noticed how young children learn best during play? Fortunately, the same principle applies to adults. Imagination is stimulated and problem-solving is boosted.

FUN IMPROVES TEAM SPIRIT AND KEEPS EVERYONE MOTIVATED

Have you ever seen a movie where a team was victorious because of team spirit? It happens all the time. When you are being cheered on by others, the challenge at hand always seems to get easier. When others believe in you, you also believe in yourself.

PERSONAL GROWTH

The fun you experience in the office will inevitably rub into your personal life. You will work, feel, look and dress better thus attracting better opportunities to yourself in and out of the workplace. It won’t take long before the outside world notices the change.
